Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz

[image src=”/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/dr-h.jpg” float=”right” style=”width:350px;”]

As a young man growing up in humble circumstances in Brooklyn (New York), Ahvie Herskowitz, with deep family roots in Europe, appreciated the way European medical doctors trained with their focus on their of care of people — rather than diseases. This would influence many of the choices he made on the road to be coming an MD and what lay beyond.

In 1974, Ahvie received a BA degree in mathematics from City University of New York. He then completed his MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and secured a residency in Anatomic Pathology at Albert Einstein Hospital studying under legends in the field such as Hans Popper, MD, Ph.D. Although CT scans and other high-tech tools were coming into widespread use, Dr. Herskowitz’s mentors in pathology wanted him to detect the signs of disease using his eyes, hands and other senses along with traditional methods of analysis and microscopy. It was a focus that in years to come would help him detect the underlying causes of disease in patients that eluded other doctors.

The 3-years Dr. Herskowitz spent as a Resident and Chief Resident in Anatomic Pathology equipped the young physician with the scientific sleuthing skills to determine the causes of chronic disease and premature death, while cross-training in the new field of Immunopathology gave him a keen understanding of how inflammation and degeneration in one organ could adversely impact the entire body. From that point on, he looked at the body as one, integrated, interconnected system.

In 1980, Dr. Herskowitz embarked on a 3-year Internal Medicine Residency and (then) Chief Residency at Yale University School of Medicine’s Greenwich Hospital. During his year as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine he continued to delve into virology, autoimmunity, and heart pathology. Dr. Herskowitz found evidence that systemic inflammation and immunological issues (and not blood lipids or fats alone) were major players in cardiovascular disease.

In 1983, Dr. Herskowitz did a 3-year Cardiology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. This was followed by 9-years as an Assistant and then Associate Professor with dual academic appointments in Medicine and Immunology and Molecular Microbiology. In addition, Dr. Herskowitz headed up a research team in the study of molecular and immunological mechanisms that underlie inflammation, autoimmunity, ischemia, heart transplantation rejection and congestive heart failure.

Following his 12 years of fruitful work at Johns Hopkins he relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. By 2000, Dr. Herskowitz had authored/coauthored over 115 peer-reviewed medical journal papers, and was also the head of a 75-person clinical research team at the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation, working with over 100 leading heart surgery hospitals around the world, reducing adverse outcomes during and after heart surgery. And, in 1999, he became Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California at San Francisco, and as his interest in Global and Public Health grew, he became Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Institute for One World Health (live link) the first non-profit pharmaceutical company in the United States.

In 2010, Dr. Herskowitz formed Anatara Medicine, (live link) based in San Francisco. Shortly afterwards he coined the phrase Convergence Medicine to reflect a novel strategy, which combines many forms of medical and energy practices into one cohesive approach to optimize, repair, and rejuvenate each individual. Anatara utilizes science-based and empiric (observation and experience informed) testing and intervention to prevent and treat cardiovascular, neurological, immunologic, inflammatory, and difficult chronic diseases. In addition, Dr. Herskowitz took insights he gleamed from the treatment of serious illnesses and developed a unique understanding of the mediators of future disease and developed this approach towards optimizing health and wellness. His Convergence Medicine (live link to graph) approach is at the cutting edge of Anti-aging and Personalized Medicine. By taking the best of both worlds, and using Molecular, Functional Medicine, Nutrition, Metabolomics, Immunogenetics, Proteomics, Physical and Energy Medicine, all layered in with the best of ancient forms of medicine plus older forms of European and Eastern medical traditions, all of which speak to a person’s innate constitution (something we call Archetypal Medicine), we are able to predict how a patient will respond to different types of treatment.

In 2015, Dr. Herskowitz founded the San Francisco Stem Cell Treatment Center where he uses powerful regenerative medicine methods and interweaves these with highly effective biologic, natural and conventional clinical agents to optimize short-term and long-term results.

Recently these various clinical enterprises have been merged into what is now Anatara Prime, a concierge oriented approach to individualized wellness.

With over four decades of experience in medicine, cardiology, immunology, regenerative medicine, and pathology, including having expanded integrative medicine to include oral/dental health, physical medicine, naturopathic medicine, and various forms of energy medicine, Dr. Herskowitz has established himself as a first-rate disease detective, medical pioneer and innovator. Exactly the kind of doctor-partner most people need in order to achieve their long-term healthcare, and antiaging goals.
