Ann Lee, MD
[x_image src=”/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/dr-lee.jpg” float=”right” style=”width:350px;”]
For Dr. Ann Lee, medicine is not a job but is her consuming passion and mission in life.
Dr. Lee and her family immigrated to America from South Korea when she was 7 years old. Her father, who later became the dean of a university, came to the US as a graduate student in search of the American dream.
During Dr. Lee’s formative years money was tight. When her younger brother became ill and bedridden with a high fever for five days, the family could not afford to take him to a doctor. This incident lit a fire in Ann’s heart to become a medical doctor.
Dr. Lee attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (graduated 1998) and completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Loma Linda University Medical Center (graduated 2003) in southern California, where she did research and published papers on traumatic brain injury.
She was then recruited for an academic position with Stanford Medical Center and served as Attending Physician in the Polytrauma/Traumatic Brain Injury Unit in the VA Palo Alto Health Care System where she cared for combat soldiers who had suffered blast injuries caused by improvised explosive devices. She was one of the first medical specialists in the United States to care for veterans with blast injuries and its many complications and was selected to represent the VA Palo Alto HCS in Washington D.C. in a special session of highly trained physicians charged with designing treatment protocols for injured soldiers (2004-2005).
Dr. Lee also has extensive experience in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. While on staff in a premier private orthopedic clinic in the Midwest, Dr. Lee performed several hundred interventional and minimally invasive procedures for various pain syndromes between 2005 and 2011.
Paradoxically, the more Dr. Lee learned about medicine as practiced in conventional settings, the more she came to recognize its limitations. Although she had helped many suffering people, she struggled when it came to prescribing yet another opioid or performing injection after injection with limited results. Dr. Lee asked herself: Why did some patients improve while others did not or even had their condition worsen? How is it that healthy people suddenly became disabled from seemingly innocuous injuries?
Dr. Lee’s original passion to practice medicine as a mission now roared to life. She decided to combine her faith and medical training and practice medicine in the mission field. This kicked off years of part-time international medical mission work, in which she served in Mexico, India and the Philippines (2011-2016).
Perhaps her greatest personal challenge came when her son fell ill and was put on antibiotics from which he developed severe side effects. After doing her own personal research into the microbiome (i.e., the microorganism world in the gut of all of us), she was able to remedy her son’s condition, as well as that of many other maladies various members of her family had been struggling with. These ailments included high blood pressure, kidney stones, back pain, insomnia, headaches, acne, and more. The wisdom of this (functional medicine) approach to healing was underscored when Dr. Lee tried it on herself and began enjoying a level of vibrant health she had not known in years.
Since beginning her journey into functional medicine, she has had the privilege of shadowing the pioneering work of leading functional medicine practitioners including Bill Barley M.D., Raj Patel M.D., and Chris Kresser, L.Ac.
Dr. Lee is excited and very confident that health restoration is genuinely attainable using a functional medicine approach, in which the root causes of illnesses are identified and addressed.
